I have a lot of experience in caregiving. My Mom, 80 years old, has had diabetes, and the accompanying secondary medical conditions that sometimes occur. I am one of 3 daughters that take turns caring for our Mom. I am there just about most evenings.
Secondly, we own a DME company. In other words, we have a company that provides medical equipment and supplies for the elderly and the handicapped. In our 30 years of owning this company, Mercy Medical in San Antonio, Texas, I have learned lot about what's involved when someone becomes ill and needs help, but does not want to go into a nursing home. Nursing homes have gotten a bad rap, but I know there are many good ones out there.
So I have become an expert in knowing what equipment (and supplies) is needed in the home so that the patient can be properly cared for. I have learned to match diagnosis with equipment. For example, if a person has emphyzema, they need a hospital bed with siderails, so that the head of the bed can be raised to allow for better breathing.
I would like to impart some of this knowledge with you, so that you do not feel lost and alone.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments that you may have.
In my next blog, I will write about family dynamics, and how caregiving almost always falls on one person, usually the oldest daughter.
